Art Gives Back
A Creative Benefit for the Victims of the North Bay fires
January, 2018
On October 2017, the North Bay Fires became one of the most destructive wildfires ever recorded in history in the United States, destroying large areas of Sonoma, Calistoga, and Santa Rosa in Northern California, and killing, injuring and displacing hundreds of families. On Januray 2018, with the generous support of museums, small nonprofits, galleries, art schools, as well as visual and performance artists, scholars, writers, curators, musicians, and dozens of volunteers, I initated and organized Art Gives Back, a creative benefit event and auction.
Through this large scale fundraising effort, we were able to raise almost $70K and provided support to some of the most vulnerable victims of the North Bay fires. 100% of the proceeds were donated to two main organizations committed to providing support to farm workers and vulnerable immigrant families in Sonoma, Calistoga, and Santa Rosa: UndocuFund & Latino Community Foundation.
Art Gives Back used two different platforms:
On January 21st, from 4 to 8pm, at Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco, Art Gives Back hosted a large ticketed in-person event. The program included live music, short performances, karaoke, family activities, food and drink vendors, as well as a silent auction that offered artworks, objects, experiences, memberships, books, and special packages, all valued under $1,000.
Partnering with Paddle8, Art Gives Back also held an online auction from January 19th through February 2nd for items priced above $1,000.
The auction items were donated by many of the most significant museums, galleries, artists, cultural producers, wineries, and chefs from the Bay Area and beyond.
All my gratitude goes to the many volunteers, donors and supporters of this collective humanitarian effort. Please read the full list of donors and volunteers below and see some documentation from the Januray 21st event at Minnesota Street Project.
